The Art of Human Being vs. Human Doing

We live in a world that celebrates busyness. Our calendars are full, our to-do lists never end, and many of us feel like we’re constantly moving from one responsibility to the next. We’ve become very skilled at being human doings — always on the go, physically, mentally, or emotionally.

But in the rush of doing, we can forget the art of simply being.

Human Doing: The Constant Striving

Being a “human doing” often looks like:

  • Always checking the next task off the list.

  • Feeling guilty when resting.

  • Struggling to slow down because the mind is still racing.

  • Defining worth by productivity or achievement.

There’s nothing wrong with getting things done — but when doing becomes our only mode, we lose connection with ourselves. We can feel drained, stressed, and invisible in our own lives.

Human Being: The Presence Within

Being a “human being” is different. It’s about presence, not productivity. It’s choosing to pause, to notice, and to reconnect with the moment.

Human being looks like:

  • Taking a few slow breaths before starting your day.

  • Sitting in the garden, simply listening to the birds.

  • Giving yourself permission to rest without guilt.

  • Remembering you are enough — not because of what you’ve done, but because of who you are.

Why It Matters for Your Wellbeing

When we shift from doing to being, even for small moments, we:

  • Reduce stress and calm the nervous system.

  • Create space for clarity and inner balance.

  • Allow the body and mind to restore naturally.

  • Reconnect with a sense of worth that doesn’t depend on achievement.

This is the heart of the work I do with Reiki at Willow Wellness Therapies. Reiki invites you into stillness

— a safe space where you can let go of “doing” and simply be. Many of my clients describe it as the first time in a long while they’ve felt deeply seen, heard, and at peace.

A Gentle Invitation

This week, I invite you to notice when you’re caught in “doing” mode. Then, gently shift into being. It could be a mindful breath, a cup of tea enjoyed without distractions, or five minutes sitting quietly in nature.

Remember: you are worthy and enough simply in your being. 🌿💜

If you’ve been craving more moments of stillness, Reiki may be a beautiful way to reconnect with your calm. Reach out to learn more about my session packages and how they can support your wellbeing.

With warmth and light,
